Polarization is everywhere, creating seemingly irreconcilable and highly toxic divides within our organizations and institutions, on campuses, in our communities and even in our friendships and families. Any topic can instantly turn into a subject of fierce polarization. But the tension is seldom about the topic in itself, but all about the underlying values, needs, concerns and emotions. 

How can we turn these polarized tensions into a constructive dialogue? How can we see the positive value behind points of view we strongly oppose? How can we recognize the other although we reject all that they stand for? How can we use differences as a strength and find both/and solutions? 

In this webinar, paradox experts Ivo Brughmans – author of Paradoxical Leadership – and Wendy K. Smith – author of Both/And Thinking – explore how a both/and perspective can help us overcome polarization. Besides a refreshingly new paradoxical lens, the authors will share insights from research and practice, and practical tools to break the polarization deadlock. 

Wendy K. Smith is gepromoveerd in organizational behavior aan de Harvard Business School, en is momenteel professor of management aan de University of Delaware. Zij is samen Marianne Lewis pionier en wereldautoriteit in het onderzoek en de theorievorming over paradoxaal denken en handelen. Wendy is oprichter en bezieler van een wereldwijde research community hierrond. Samen met Marianne Lewis publiceerde ze in 2022 het boek ‘Both/And Thinking’ bij Harvard Business Press.

Kenneth S. Stern is advocaat, auteur en directeur van het Bard Centre for the Study of Hate. Hij is een regelmatig gevraagde gast in Amerikaanse nieuws- en duidingsprogramma’s en zijn opiniestukken verschijnen in o.a. The New York Times, The Washington Post en CNN. In zijn boek ‘The Conflict Over the Conflict: The Israel/Palestine Campus Debate’ uit 2020 onderzoekt hij de pogingen van aanhangers van beide kanten om de ander te censureren, en de daaruit voortvloeiende schade.
